I have been working on this blog and a few others for quite some time now and I find that I get distracted. I don’t mean completely distracted where I stop working on my business. It’s more like, you learn something new or you chase a specific idea and before you know it, you are off the path to where you were going. Here are a few tips for not getting distracted.
New ideas are needed to build anything, so I am not saying you shouldn’t explore new ideas or you should stop learning new tricks.
When a started this blog, the purpose for it, my intent, was to help other people by sharing what I know about building an online business. That is it, in a nutshell!
Now to do that, help other people, you have to find a way to reach them, to get the material in front of those that you wish to help. If you are not careful it is easy to find yourself so focused on getting that reach that you lose sight of the helping part.
If you are trying to build a business online you have to provide an audience with content that they find valuable to them for one reason or another. You will see it everywhere, “content is king” – “quality content is a must”! Just Google it and you’ll see what mean.
Distractions can come in every small area of your business, including the process of content creation.
Here is the first tip.
Write an article outline for your post before you sit to write your post, and stick to the outline. When I first started writing I never used an outline. I got advice from others that said, “use an outline” and I just thought, “that’s not my process.” So, I wrote for a long time, without using an outline. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the end of the world but if you get distracted in the process of putting together a post, this will help.
I started building a boat about two years ago, I worked on that thing every day for months. Something happened and I stopped working on the project. Although I walk around that boat every day, I haven’t touched it in a year and a half! lol
You may be thinking twice about taking my advice on distractions, now!
I wrote an article a while back about blogging which included, how to create a “mission statement” for your business. I think this is very important to a successful business and can help in the area of distraction, as well.
Create a Mission Statement for your Business
A concise mission statement based on the purpose of your business will help you stay on track if you use it. First write it out, then post it in a few places just for you, then share it with others. My recommendation is you read it every day, at least a couple times a week. I even repeat it out loud several times in a row, like a mini-mantra, sometimes.
Let’s face it, if you are building an online business, there is coding to figure out, list building to work on, marketing on a daily basis, content creation, SEO, analytics, the list goes on and on. It is easy to get so entrenched in all of it that you really need to remind yourself of tips for not getting distracted.
Stay on schedule
Create a routine or schedule that is less than you can manage. What I mean by that is, go easy on yourself, keep is simple. Once you are on task, you can always put in a little or even a lot, extra. A schedule that you can always stick to is helpful. Many times we try to max ourselves out, especially when starting a business. The problem comes when you cannot keep up with the schedule or routine.
What will happen is, you come up a few hours short and you have now choice but to accept it. Then your acceptance of coming up short starts to grow. Kind of like my boat story or like my recent article on how building a business is like joining a gym. Just put together a schedule for the bare minimum you want to accomplish each day or week. Like I said you can always do more and the doing more has a completely different impact on your psyche.
This last bit may seem a little off subject.
Celebrate your wins and express gratitude for them, rather than pressuring yourself to achieve more, faster. A practice of gratitude will bring you more of the things you are grateful for, without you having to push so hard. We get distracted in pursuit of things because we are always pushing for more, bigger, better.
You can turn that entire aspect of your life upside down.
Express gratitude and open the flow for things to come to you rather than you always pushing for them. I know you are a hard worker, I know you got where you are by making things happen. All I am saying is, cultivate a feeling of gratitude in your business and open the doors for abundance.
I hope this helps you in some small way, I am grateful for you having been here. If there is ever anything I can help you with please feel free to reach out.
